Montana Property Taxes: Pay More, What For?

July 7, 2023

Montana Property Taxes: Pay More, What For?

  1. Governor Greg Gianforte and Montana’s Republican legislators raised your state residential taxes by 43 percent – a total of $81 million a year.
  2. They ignored a warning from Gov. Gianforte’s state Department of Revenue in November 2022 – before the 2023 Legislature began – that residential property appraisals would greatly increase, and that if they didn’t change the state property tax rate on residential property, state property taxes on homeowners also would jump by 43 percent.
  3. Montana homeowners now are receiving 2023 property appraisals, and are stunned by the huge jump in their property’s assessed value.
  4. The state property tax hike is set in stone (statue) – regardless of what local governments do.
  5. But Montana legislative Democrats are FIGHTING for Montana homeowners in an attempt to fix this HUGE state property tax increase.
  6. They have a simple fix – lower the state residential tax rate from 1.35 percent to 0.94 percent, and negate the ongoing state property tax increase of $81 million a year.
  7. Montana legislative Democrats have a two-page bill draft to do just that – to FIGHT for Montana homeowners. This can be fixed in a day in Helena.
  8. Montana Democrats are asking Gov. Gianforte to call a one-day special session to fix this HUGE problem and provide STATE PROPERTY TAX RELIEF to Montana Homeowners, who over the last several decades have seen the property tax burden SHIFTED to them from business and corporate equipment.
  9. Now is the TIME to stand up and FIGHT for Montana homeowners. They can’t afford a 43-percent state property tax increase on their homes as taxes are shifted to them from the wealthy and big corporations.
